…Members are not considering whether this is going to help or hurt them in their election. They may have views on that. What they are really considering… is their personal responsibility, their oath of office, their pledge to defend the Constitution and laws of the United States of America.
Last week, House Democrats passed H.R.3, the Elijah E. Cummings Lower Drug Costs Now Act, and delivered on our pledge to address the skyrocketing cost of prescription drugs. Members are discussing passage of the bill and how it will bring down prices for constituents across the country. Here’s a look at what they are saying:
We feel very strongly that we are compelled by our duty to our oath in the Constitution and our democracy to act today where we have found that the President of the United States has abused his power.
When you look at the evidence, in a fair and balanced way, it is inevitable that you come to the conclusion that this President abused his authority, his power as president, and [he] ought to be held accountable. If we don't do that, then we are subject to, as so many Constitutional experts have said, to losing our democracy.
This is a solemn and somber day for our country. For only the fourth time in our nation’s history, the House Judiciary Committee has recommended articles of impeachment against the President of the United States. The responsibility of impeaching the president for ‘high crimes and misdemeanors’ is one the House must take very seriously, one that must not be avoided when demanded by the overwhelming evidence presented.
On the fourth anniversary of the Paris Climate Agreement, House Democrats have a message for the American people and our allies around the world: we are still in. While the President withdrew our nation from the agreement – abdicating American leadership and placing our environment, public health, national security and economic competitiveness at risk – House Democrats are committed to addressing climate change with the urgency it demands.
The ruling by the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Texas reaffirms what Democrats and even many Republicans in Congress have been saying all along: President Trump’s attempt to steal funds from the military to build an expensive and ineffective border wall is unconstitutional and illegal.
I am glad that negotiators were able to reach agreement on a new trade agreement with Canada and Mexico that could be brought before the Congress for consideration.
House Democrats never sought impeachment, instead demonstrating extreme restraint as we watched this President engage in actions and behavior that we believed to be abhorrent and anathema to our nation’s highest principles.
