This month’s jobs report marks the last of a decade that began with unemployment near 10% as we reeled from the worst of the Great Recession. That decade now ends amid an economic expansion marked by 111 consecutive months – more than nine years – of job growth. While President Trump will continue to claim credit for a strong economy, this month’s report caps a year that ranks a mere eighth in the 2010’s for job creation. Rather than focusing solely on a stock market buoyed by record stock buybacks and dividends, a deeper dive into the true measures of our economic health ought to give us some pause.
I am encouraged that President Trump signed an emergency declaration last night at the request of the Governor of Puerto Rico, which has seen damaging earthquakes over the past few days.
Like all Americans, I am appalled and outraged by Iran’s attack against Iraq and our troops stationed there. I stand strongly and firmly with our men and women in uniform, who are doing their jobs with honor and courage to defend our freedom and the safety of our country and its allies abroad. I pray that our servicemembers are safe, and my thoughts are with their families waiting anxiously for news back home. I am also thinking of the Iraqis and coalition partners who serve alongside our troops and praying for their safety.
The death of Qasem Soleimani should be welcomed by all who support peace and oppose terrorism. He was an enemy of peace and one of the world’s most dangerous proponents and practitioners of terror. He has spent his last two decades building a force that threatens America, Israel, and innocent people around the world.
My thoughts and prayers are with my brother, my friend, and my colleague, John Lewis, at this time. Just as he has fought injustice throughout his lifetime, I know he will battle this illness with courage, strength, and determination. And as he does so, the Congress, the people of Georgia’s Fifth Congressional District, and Americans across the nation will be standing with him.
I was shocked and saddened by this anti-Semitic attack in New York - and alarmed by the rise in hateful attacks against Jews. Nothing can ever justify anti-Semitism or any vile acts of racist violence.
As the first year of the 116th Congress draws to a close, it caps the end of a busy year for the Democratic Majority, one that has seen a long list of legislative successes on behalf of the American people. From the very start, our focus has been on achieving results For the People.
…It was a day… of responsibility. It was a day where Members who had raised their hand and sworn to protect the Constitution of the United States and our democracy felt they had no choice in light of the President's actions, in light of the President trying to dragoon a foreign head of government to participate in the American elections. It put our national security at risk and the integrity of our elections at risk, and I think that you saw some extraordinary courage on the Democratic side...
I am disappointed by today’s decision by a federal appeals court to invalidate a key component of the Affordable Care Act and send the case back to a lower court. This will only cause further uncertainty for patients, consumers, and providers. This case was brought by Republicans and supported by the Trump Administration, and it seeks to invalidate the law in its entirety – even the most popular provisions, such as protecting Americans with pre-existing conditions and eliminating annual and lifetime limits on coverage.
