National Security

Keeping America safe is Congress’ most important duty. Democrats are focused on strengthening U.S. national security, defending democracy, and restoring America’s leadership in the world.

Democrats are committed to enhancing our national security and advancing key American interests, while supporting human rights and democratic values at home and abroad.

In the 117th Congress, Democrats passed a bipartisan defense authorization bill that strengthened our national security, ensured our military personnel have the resources they need to defend our country, and bolstered our allies and international interests. In the 118th Congress, Democrats will build on these gains by continuing to help President Biden keep Americans safe.

We will continue to work with the Administration to provide our diplomats and our troops with the tools needed to carry out their missions abroad safely and effectively. This will include continuing to work with our allies to ensure Russia’s illegal and unprovoked invasion of Ukraine ends in defeat for Putin, that America maintains its competitiveness against China’s authoritarian challenges, and that the world is free from threats posed by Iran.

Today, House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (D-MD) joined Committee on House Administration Ranking Member Robert A. Brady (D-PA), House Committee on Homeland Security Ranking Member Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), House Homeland Security Subcommittee on Immigration and Border Security Ranking Member Zoe Lofgren (D-CA), and eleven other House Democrats in sending a letter to the Appropriations Committee requesting an additional $14 million in funding for the Election Assistance Commission (EAC) to secure voting systems against cyberattacks.

With this release, the American people now have information that Republicans on the Intelligence Committee omitted from their memo and a fuller picture of how the Republican memo was a partisan effort to undermine the Special Counsel’s investigation.
The United States ought to use every tool in our possession to pressure the North Koreans to end their dangerous buildup of nuclear arms.
No longer can President Trump pretend that Vladimir Putin’s Russia was not responsible for cyberattacks targeting the 2016 election.
ICYMI, OMB Director Mick Mulvaney told the House Budget Committee yesterday that the military parade requested by President Trump would cost taxpayers up to $30 million.
This report could not have come at a more important time.  With Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats’s testimony in the Senate yesterday that Russia intends to target the 2018 midterm elections, it is imperative that Congress take steps not only to identify vulnerabilities in voting systems but address them. 
It is fitting that the House Oversight Committee should investigate whether White House personnel were improperly accessing classified materials while holding only interim security clearances.
Yesterday’s events highlight the dangers of continued instability in Syria. Iran has used the conflict in Syria to establish a forward base of terror against Israel and support those who are committed to destroying the Jewish State – a goal Iran’s leaders have stated clearly and repeatedly.
