National Security

Keeping America safe is Congress’ most important duty. Democrats are focused on strengthening U.S. national security, defending democracy, and restoring America’s leadership in the world.

Democrats are committed to enhancing our national security and advancing key American interests, while supporting human rights and democratic values at home and abroad.

In the 117th Congress, Democrats passed a bipartisan defense authorization bill that strengthened our national security, ensured our military personnel have the resources they need to defend our country, and bolstered our allies and international interests. In the 118th Congress, Democrats will build on these gains by continuing to help President Biden keep Americans safe.

We will continue to work with the Administration to provide our diplomats and our troops with the tools needed to carry out their missions abroad safely and effectively. This will include continuing to work with our allies to ensure Russia’s illegal and unprovoked invasion of Ukraine ends in defeat for Putin, that America maintains its competitiveness against China’s authoritarian challenges, and that the world is free from threats posed by Iran.

Tonight, the House Intelligence Committee voted unanimously to allow the release of the Democratic-produced memo providing greater clarity into the FBI’s pursuit of a FISA warrant connected with the investigation into Russian efforts to subvert our democracy.
Editorial boards have some harsh criticism for Republicans today regarding their egregious efforts to undermine rule of law in order to protect the President. Take a look at this morning’s editorials:

Today, Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) sent a letter to Speaker Paul Ryan urging him to remove Rep. Devin Nunes from his position as Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee after he altered a partisan, misleading classified memo and transmitted it to the White House without review or approval from the Committee.
Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) joined House and Senate Democrats today in sending a letter to President Trump warning him against using the newly-released partisan Nunes Memo as a pretext to fire either Special Counsel Bob Mueller or Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein – who is overseeing Special Counsel Mueller’s Russia investigation.
Today, the President of the United States chose to ignore the serious warnings of the Department of Justice, FBI, and the intelligence community to release a doctored classified memo for the purposes of smearing the law enforcement agencies investigating his campaign.
Trump-appointed officials of the Department and Justice and FBI have warned against House Republicans releasing a flawed, misleading memo with classified information, and so is Republican Senator John Thune.
These new developments concerning Chairman Nunes are deeply disturbing, and I urge Speaker Ryan to remove him from his position as Chair of the House Intelligence Committee.
Anyone who has doubts about whether House Republicans are using the Nunes Memo as a way to undermine the Russia investigation and protect the President ought to take a look at this report.
