Fiscal Responsibility

Over the years, Democrats have shown our commitment to restoring fiscal responsibility by taking actions that have reduced our national deficit while investing in the American people’s priorities.

Over the years, Democrats have shown our commitment to restoring fiscal responsibility by taking actions that have reduced our national deficit while investing in the American people’s priorities. During the 117th Congress, House Democrats delivered the landmark Inflation Reduction Act, which will reduce the deficit by over $300 billion while lowering health care and energy costs and taking action on climate change. In sharp contrast, Republicans jammed their 2017 Trump Tax Scam through Congress without a single hearing, gifting trillions of dollars in unpaid-for tax handouts to the wealthiest Americans and large corporations while leaving our nation with ballooning deficits. They have repeatedly held our economy hostage to benefit their irresponsible ideological agenda, whether creating artificial “fiscal cliffs,” shutting down the government, or bringing our nation to the brink of defaulting on its obligations. With other landmark legislation delivered during the 117th Congress, including the American Rescue Plan, the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, and the CHIPS and Science Act, Democrats have worked to invest in economic recovery, job creation, all while cutting the deficit in half last year. Democrats are committed to continuing our work to restore sound, long-term fiscal management so future generations can afford to invest in opportunities, secure the American Dream, and ensure workers have the tools to Make It In America.

Cost sharing reductions are and should continue to be permanent, mandatory funding. That is the law.

The Trump White House must not remember how the last shut down played out. With just four days in session before the April 28 deadline, reports indicate the White House and some Republicans are ready to shut down the government in order to fund their border wall. A look at some recent polling shows just how unpopular that would be with the American people:

From CQ Roll Call:

Once again, President Trump has selected a nominee to lead an agency that individual believes should not exist and has tried to destroy.

April 12th marks 100 days of the GOP-controlled 115th Congress. Republicans are the governing party, with majorities in both the House and Senate and control of the White House. Yet their deep division and dysfunction has resulted in chaos, incompetence, and the inability to govern.

This week, the GOP-led House completed a six-week work period, and I am deeply disappointed that House Republicans’ dysfunction prevented the House from getting things done for the American people during that time.

Congress has just seven legislative days to fund the government before the current continuing resolution expires on April 28.

Following the collapse of Republicans’ TrumpCare bill, Democrats stand ready to work with Republicans to improve the Affordable Care Act and ensure access to quality, affordable health care for all Americans.

Today's Congressional Budget Office report on the long-term budget outlook ought to serve as a warning that Congress must work in a bipartisan way to put America's fiscal house in order.

Last week, President Trump released a budget blueprint for fiscal year 2018 that represents a radical disinvestment in America

I think it's probably the most irresponsible budget I’ve seen and most unrealistic budget I’ve seen, and I doubt very seriously that Republicans on either the Appropriations or the authorizing committees think it can be accomplished or should be accomplished.
