WASHINGTON, DC – Today, House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) introduced legislation to remove a bust of Chief Justice Roger Brooke Taney from public display in the U.S. Capitol and replace it with a bust of Associate Justice Thurgood Marshall.
One year ago today, the new Democratic House Majority passed H.R. 1, the 'For the People Act.' This comprehensive reform bill fulfilled Democrats’ promise to increase transparency, accountability, and ethics in government. Our legislation makes it easier for Americans to exercise their right to vote, puts in place national redistricting reform, reforms our campaign finance system to get dark money out of politics, and institutes stronger ethics rules for public officials.

While the February jobs report continues to show a record streak of job gains going back more than nine years, we also are learning in real time from both our financial markets and from Main Street businesses that we must be prepared for disruptions in global supply chains and lower consumer demand that could impact our economy and working families as a result of the coronavirus. This jobs report also shows a slowdown in wage growth that cannot be ignored.

Republicans have been trying to dismantle the Affordable Care Act since day one. They failed to overturn it in court in 2012 and they failed to repeal it in Congress in 2017, even though they controlled every part of government.

I want to congratulate incoming President Betsy Korn and outgoing President Mort Fridman for their leadership. Thank you as well to Howard Kohr for his continued efforts to make the U.S.-Israel relationship strong, resilient, and enduring. Let me also extend my thanks to Jeff Snyder, who is stepping down from the AIPAC board this month.  He has been – and continues to be – both a friend and a highly effective advocate for Israel.
I join in celebrating Women’s History Month throughout March.  This year, we observe the centennial of the adoption of the Nineteenth Amendment, which enshrined in our Constitution the right of women to vote.
