WASHINGTON, DC – House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) delivered remarks today at a press event on H.R. 1980, the Smithsonian Women’s History Act, which will be considered by the House tomorrow. Below is a transcript of his remarks:
President Trump’s FY2021 budget is replete with dangerous proposals that leave working families to fend for themselves in a changing and uncertain economy.  This budget makes the President’s priorities clear: the wealthiest Americans come first ahead of working Americans who are trying to get by and get ahead.
Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman is a hero for standing up and speaking the truth, knowing it might cost him retaliation from this corrupt commander-in-chief. His removal from the White House was nothing more than an act of retribution, an intrusion against the nonpartisan nature of our military and federal service. I hope Republicans will join in a bipartisan condemnation of this attack on our military personnel.
Economy Weekly: Week of February 3, 2020

The jobs report released this morning provides further confirmation that economic performance under President Trump is losing steam.
House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released a video today pushing back on the falsehoods in President Trump’s State of the Union address, in which he took credit for the strong economy he inherited and misled the American people about his record and policies, which are failing working families.
Today, House Democrats stood up for Medicaid and passed a resolution rejecting President Trump’sillegal block-grant scheme.  Millions of low-income Americans, people with disabilities, seniors, pregnant mothers, and those struggling with addiction are able to access quality, affordable health care because of the coverage they receive through Medicaid.
Today is a sad day for our republic.  The United States Senate, acting as a court of impeachment under our Constitution, did not remove a president who abused his power and invited foreign interference in the upcoming election to benefit himself personally.  The bipartisan vote in favor of holding him accountable and preserving, protecting, and defending our Constitution against a clear, impeachable offense was, unfortunately, not enough to overcome a partisan firewall of senators who chose loyalty to President Trump over loyalty to their oaths.
This evening, President Trump had an opportunity to show the American people and the Congress that he takes seriously the challenges we face as a nation and his responsibility as president to rally the country together to meet them.  Instead, he doubled-down on the rank partisanship and divisiveness that have characterized his presidency, using his address to attack those who disagree with him and to take credit for the successes of the prior Administration while misleading on his own record...
A trial cannot be fair if witnesses are prohibited from being heard.  Senators cannot be faithful to their oaths of impartiality if they conspire with the President to prevent the testimony of witnesses with damning information against his case.
