WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the anniversary of the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act being signed into law in 2013: 

“Today, we mark the 49th anniversary of ‘Bloody Sunday,’ when a march for equality and voting rights in Selma, Alabama, was met with violent suppression.  

“The monthly jobs report released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics this morning demonstrates that, while our recovery continues, Congress must do more to help the private sector create jobs that pay well and open doors to opportunity.

“It is extremely disappointing that House Republicans decided to hold their fiftieth vote to undermine or repeal the Affordable Care Act today. 

“Republicans in the House and Senate ought to weigh carefully their position of continuing to block an important lifeline for Americans who continue to seek jobs.

Today, President Obama proposed a budget that is focused on growth, opportunity, and security.

House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) and Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) are joining with Members of Congress to send the following letter to President Barack Obama in the coming days on efforts to prevent a nuclear armed Iran. 

"Today's report by the Institute for Supply Management shows a manufacturing sector that continues to expand at a steady pace.

"I will continue to monitor the situation in Ukraine closely as it develops. Like the President, I am deeply disturbed by reports of Russian troop movements inside Ukraine's borders, and it is important that respect for Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity is maintained.
