As we join together to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day, let us reaffirm his message of brotherhood and sisterhood as a foundation for our common enterprise of American democracy. 
President Trump and Senator McConnell need to open government today.
The needless continuation of the Trump shutdown is unacceptable and detrimental to our nation and its economy.  Democrats have offered one idea after another to reopen government, and we will continue to vote on legislation to end the Trump shutdown.
House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (D-MD) today sent a letter to Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin asking for a delay in the lifting of certain Russia sanctions, now that bipartisan majorities in both the House and Senate have indicated their disapproval of such a move. 
[The economic consequences of the government shutdown] are very substantial, very unfortunate, and very unnecessary.
[Democrats] have supported a lot of resources and expansion of border security personnel, border security technology, all sorts of things that have been designed to make the border more secure.
The deadly attack in Syria was a horrific reminder that the battle against ISIS continues.
Today, House Democrats once again voted to reopen government while 187 House Republicans voted to keep it shut down.  Meanwhile, 800,000 federal employees and their families are finding it harder to make ends meet, and Americans across the country are being denied the services they expect from their government. 
I want to thank [Education and Labor Committee Chair] Bobby Scott for his leadership. Speaker [Nancy] Pelosi, who as she said, the last time we were in charge, one of the first things we did was raise minimum wage. It was not enough then. It is clearly not enough now.
Our first day, on January 3, [House Democrats] passed legislation that would have opened every agency of government, for a short time, to be sure, for Homeland Security, but would have opened up all government agencies with Senate bills.
