House Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer (MD) and House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (CA) issued a statement of support of today’s release of bulk access to House and Senate bill status information by the U.S. Government Printing Office (GPO) and Library of Congress (LOC).

The Democratic Whip Office’s sixth annual Member Online All-Star Competition came to a close earlier this week. It was a great success, with House Democrats collectively gaining over 231,000 new social media followers over three weeks.

Mr. Speaker, I rise in opposition to the COMPETES reauthorization act, which is an attempt to disinvest, in my view, in research, innovation, and education at a time when we ought to be investing in those areas even more greatly.

This week, the House will vote on H.R. 1806, House Republicans’ partisan bill to reauthorize the America COMPETES Act. Unlike the original bill in 2007 and the reauthorization in 2010, which both passed with strong bipartisan support, the America COMPETES Reauthorization Act of 2015 was reported by the Science Committee on a party line basis and has no chance of being signed into law.

Today, House Democrats and Republicans came together to pass legislation that will protect Americans’ civil liberties while ensuring that law enforcement and homeland security agencies have the tools they need to keep our country safe. 

Once again, House Republicans are using the appropriations process to score political points and send a message to their base by advancing funding bills that continue the disastrous sequester policy and that include partisan policy riders that would be disastrous for our country.

I am pleased that the House has taken bipartisan action to address the issue of enhancing cybersecurity.
