Hoyer: USA FREEDOM Act Protects Americans' Civil Liberties, Ensures Law Enforcement Has the Tools to Keep Our Country Safe

WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the House passed the bipartisan USA FREEDOM Act: 

“Today, House Democrats and Republicans came together to pass legislation that will protect Americans’ civil liberties while ensuring that law enforcement and homeland security agencies have the tools they need to keep our country safe.  The USA FREEDOM Act is a bipartisan compromise that strikes a careful balance between reforming FISA to enhance privacy protections and making sure that data critical to investigations and counterterrorism efforts can be collected in a responsible and targeted fashion.  I want to thank Ranking Members Adam Schiff and John Conyers for their hard work to reach this compromise legislation, as well as Rep. Dutch Ruppersberger for his longstanding leadership on this issue.  I hope the Senate will swiftly follow the House in passing the bill with strong bipartisan support.”
