Republican Outrages
Since taking the Speaker’s gavel last fall, Speaker Paul Ryan has discussed the need to build a more “Confident America.” Yet six months into his Speakership, Speaker Ryan continues to struggle with deep divisions and dysfunction within his Conference, preventing the House from getting anything done for the American people, including passing a budget.
This week, the House took up several partisan bills that would target the IRS and make it harder for civil servants to do their jobs.
Doesn’t seem like it. During colloquy today, Whip Hoyer asked Leader McCarthy when Republicans intend to bring their budget to the Floor. Leader McCarthy’s response? Click here to find out.
House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) joined House Democrats on the House Floor yesterday for a Special Order Hour to call on Senate Republicans to do their job and hold confirmation hearings and an up-or-down vote on Supreme Court Justice nominee Merrick Garland.
In the six months he’s been in charge, Speaker Paul Ryan has struggled with deep divisions among his Members, preventing the House from being able to accomplish much of anything. The GOP conference is as divided and dysfunctional as ever and has failed to address any of the critical issues facing America, such as passing a budget, addressing public health emergencies like Zika, Flint, and opioid addiction, and providing Puerto Rico with relief.
Today, House Republicans missed the statutory deadline to pass a budget, notwithstanding the fact that they made passing a budget a top priority this year. It’s unfortunate that division and dysfunction within their Party prevented them from passing a budget, and I am deeply disappointed that many of their Members are urging Republican leadership to abandon the spending levels Congress passed last year.
House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after House Republicans failed to pass a budget resolution by the April 15 statutory deadline.
Despite years of talking about how critical it is to pass a budget – and ceaseless criticism of the Senate when they failed to pass one – Speaker Ryan and House Republicans have all but given up on passing a budget for Fiscal Year 2017. Politico highlights the hypocrisy this morning:
Today, President Obama unveiled his budget for Fiscal Year 2017, which reduces the deficit and puts debt on a sustainable path while laying out a vision for how we can give every American a fair shot at economic security; accelerate American innovation; and keep Americans safe.
Another day, another dose of deep Republican divisions. Take a look at today’s headlines detailing the “paralysis,” “chaos,” and “disarray” that is the GOP:
