John Dingell was my friend.  He was a man of indefatigable spirit who loved life, the lovely Deborah his wife, and the House of Representatives. 
As we begin the celebration of Black History Month today, we look to the extraordinary story of African Americans in our country, enriching our national life through civic leadership, military service, business, the arts, science, literature, sports, and entertainment. 
Ninety years ago today, our nation was blessed with the arrival of the most consequential American of the twentieth century and one of the brightest lights in the history of our country. 
Our nation lost a true patriot.  As a young fighter pilot in the Pacific Theater of the Second World War, George H.W. Bush risked his life to defend this country, and was shot down on a dangerous mission.
Ed Pastor was a friend and a colleague who commanded respect from all corners of the House. 
I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Dr. James Billington. He presided over the Library of Congress during a time of profound technological change, overseeing the process of making the Library's extraordinary collections more accessible to their owners: the American people.
The Constitution provides the Senate with a responsibility to advise and consent to the President’s appointment of senior federal officials who fulfill Constitutionally important roles in the exercise of our government. 
I am horrified by today’s shooting at Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh. I am praying for the victims and their families. As a nation, we need to confront the truth that words have consequences.
One year ago today, our nation experienced the worst mass shooting in its history, with fifty-eight people killed and more than 400 wounded by gunfire.
