WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the one-year anniversary of the deadly shooting in Las Vegas, Nevada:

“One year ago today, our nation experienced the worst mass shooting in its history, with fifty-eight people killed and more than 400 wounded by gunfire.  Hundreds more were injured in the shooting’s aftermath as thousands of attendees of an outdoor music festival ran for cover and tried to escape the volleys of gunfire from military-style assault rifles.  On this day, we remember the victims and mourn once more with their families, and we keep in our hearts the survivors as they continue to cope with the scars of that day – both physical and mental.

“As I reflect on this mass shooting and the many others that have occurred across our nation in recent years, I am angered that Congress has failed to do its job and keep the American people safe.  Beholden to the N.R.A., Congressional Republicans have refused to allow commonsense gun safety legislation supported by nine out of ten Americans to reach the Floor for consideration.  Meanwhile, our people continue to lose their lives in deadly, preventable shootings.  Congress must get back to work protecting Americans by passing legislation to ban the most dangerous, military-style assault weapons; ban bump stocks; and expand background checks to keep firearms out of the hands of those who cannot be trusted to handle them responsibly.”
