The so-called election this weekend in Russia was a sham, rigged by President Vladimir Putin to secure for himself another term of complete control over the Russian state, which is no longer a true democracy. 
In recent months, we have seen a dramatic and troubling rise in anti-Semitism across the globe. Even more alarming, it has spread after being promoted by leaders of far-right parties.
These new sanctions against Russian individuals and entities complicit in cyberattacks targeting American elections, authorized under bipartisan legislation I cosponsored, are a welcome step. 
Russia’s attacks against dissidents on British soil are unconscionable and violate international law.  I stand in strong solidarity with Prime Minister May and the British government as they take appropriate retaliatory action today. 
I thank Secretary Tillerson for his service and congratulate Mike Pompeo on his nomination to serve as our next Secretary of State. 
With the renaming of Boris Nemtsov Plaza, officials from Vladimir Putin’s Russia will be reminded of the movement for democracy in their country every time they enter or exit their embassy here in Washington.
I join in mourning the death of His Royal Highness Prince Henrik of Denmark.  As Prince Consort alongside Her Majesty Queen Magrethe, he spent the past forty-six years helping to represent Denmark and its traditions around the world. 
Yesterday’s events highlight the dangers of continued instability in Syria. Iran has used the conflict in Syria to establish a forward base of terror against Israel and support those who are committed to destroying the Jewish State – a goal Iran’s leaders have stated clearly and repeatedly.
Poland’s long fight for democracy and its embrace of democratic norms have served as a model for European nations in transition and countries around the globe.
Peaceful protest is one of the basic rights to which all people are entitled, and Iran’s theocratic regime must answer to the demands of those who seek greater freedom and opportunity.
