WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the Trump Administration's announcement of long overdue sanctions against Russia:

“These new sanctions against Russian individuals and entities complicit in cyberattacks targeting American elections, authorized under bipartisan legislation I cosponsored, are a welcome step.  However, they come many weeks after the Congress presented the President with the authority to identify those responsible for election interference and sanction them.  It is dismaying that President Trump seemed to dismiss the need to implement the sanctions against Russia that we authorized, and today’s announcement highlights how his own Administration is at odds with this President’s refusal to acknowledge Russia’s responsibility for the election hacking.  We must continue taking measures to deter and prevent Russian attempts to influence our elections and get to the bottom of what happened in 2016 – it must not stop here.”
