Congress

The legislation introduced yesterday by House Foreign Affairs Committee Ranking Member Engel and Representative Connolly reflects a deep concern in Congress and among the American people that a foreign power acted to undermine our election and influence it in favor of a particular candidate.

As you know, we treat House Delegates and the Resident Commissioner for almost all purposes the same as we treat all other Members.

Reports of a CIA assessment that Russia tried to sway our election through hacks and then selectively releasing information are extremely alarming.

This week, the House of Representatives passed a continuing resolution that funds the government through April 28.

While I believe the House took the appropriate action today to prevent another unnecessary government shutdown, I believe that passing yet another continuing resolution is not the right approach to funding our government.

While I'm pleased that the House did not proceed with a resolution of impeachment against Commissioner Koskinen, I find it shameful that the House even considered such a step without any evidence of wrongdoing and for purely partisan motivations that even a majority of Republican Members opposed.

As the Republican-led 114th Congress comes to an end, it’s clear that this Congress has become yet another closed, unproductive, do-nothing Congress.

I join in congratulating Rep. Luján on his re-election as DCCC chair and Reps. Cárdenas, Jeffries, Bustos, and Cicilline on joining the expanded Democratic leadership team, and I thank all those who stepped up to run.

This week, I was pleased to receive the support of my colleagues and be elected by acclamation as Democratic Whip for the 115th Congress.

I’m glad to support this defense authorization bill, which includes important provisions to strengthen our military so it will continue to be well prepared to meet the global security challenges of the twenty-first century.
