Comprehensive Immigration Reform

The United States is a nation of immigrants, and we recognize the contributions made by Americans who came to this country from all over the world to make a new home and pursue the American Dream. That’s why House Democrats continue to work for common sense, comprehensive, and balanced immigration reform: reform that secures our borders, respects the rule of law, and provides immigrants with a fair chance of achieving the American Dream. We believe that if you work hard and play by the rules, you should have a chance at building a future here in America. Comprehensive immigration reform would be good for the American economy and help our fiscal outlook. House Democrats have worked to establish a pathway to citizenship for Dreamers and T.P.S. and D.E.D. status holders by twice-passing the bipartisan American Dream and Promise Act, which Republicans continue to obstruct in the Senate. House Democrats also passed the Farm Workforce Modernization Act to reform the H-2A guestworker program to allow those contributing to our agricultural economy to remain in America. President Biden has taken action to restore the DACA program, end wasteful spending on an ineffective border wall, and reaffirm America’s values. Democrats will continue to partner with the Biden Administration to help Dreamers, fix American’s broken immigration system and ensure that it strengthens America and grows our economy.
During our meeting with Director Holman, I raised the important point that ICE must be in close communication with Members of Congress, particularly Members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus and Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus, who are worried about the impact of immigration raids in their districts.
Things aren't going so well for Republicans back in their districts. Last night, Reps. Jason Chaffetz (R-UT), Justin Amash (R-MI), and Diane Black (R-TN) arrived at town halls with hundreds of voters demanding answers on President Trump’s unconstitutional Muslim ban, GOP efforts to #MakeAmericaSickAgain, and more.
Politico reports on the vocal opposition Chaffetz faced:
Tonight, America's judicial system delivered a strong rebuke to the Trump Administration's unconstitutional Muslim ban.
While The Trump Administration claims their unconstitutional Muslim ban is designed to keep America safe, the facts show that’s not the case. Today, the New York Times offers additional evidence: the ban is preventing doctors from serving communities across the country.
Today, Speaker Ryan tweeted a blog post from his office, titled “Poorly-crafted regulations that hurt people? Not on our watch.”
As the Trump Administration defends its unconstitutional Muslim ban in the courts, former diplomats and national security officials, as well as business leaders, are weighing in and voicing their opposition to the ban because it puts our nation and our troops at risk and is bad for business.
This week, Democrats introduced legislation to repeal the Trump Administration’s Muslim ban, which is unconstitutional and makes American less safe.
The wide impact of this ban should be deeply concerning to all Americans. This ban is not only dividing families and violating our highest principles, it is also making us less safe and plays right into the hands of ISIS and other terror groups.
“Thank you very much Leader. I thank the Leader, in case you didn’t hear that. I am, I don’t know that I’m pleased to be here, because we ought not to be here, discussing this subject we’re discussing.
President Trump’s Muslim ban emboldens our enemies, undermines our alliances around the world, and makes America less safe.
