WASHINGTON, DC – House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) joined MSNBC’s Chris Jansing this afternoon to discuss the insufficient Republican response to the coronavirus pandemic and the urgent need for relief for American families. Below are excerpts from his interview and a link to the video:
Over the past two months, the House has taken extraordinary action on a range of issues important to the American people. By following a new format of first allowing time for committees to meet and complete their work, followed by time for the House to be in session holding votes, we were able to complete our work safely by minimizing the number of people in the Capitol complex at any one time.
Our country has hit another horrific milestone, with five million coronavirus cases diagnosed - far higher than any other country - while President Trump stays at his private golf club and issues an executive order and three memoranda that do not address the crisis at hand.
While I am relieved the unemployment rate fell slightly in July, there is little to celebrate. At 10.2%, it is still above the worst month of the Great Recession, and the pace of job gains slowed again last month.
oday, a federal court affirmed what was already clear from our Constitution: the House has the right to determine its own rules, including the allowance of proxy voting as an emergency measure during this pandemic.
Fifty-five years ago today, President Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act of 1965 into law, bringing to fruition the goals of those who courageously marched with John Lewis in Selma and with Dr. King and so many others to Montgomery earlier that year.
We have people who are desperate... They are desperate for themselves, their families and their children. We passed a bill, unfortunately, the Senate sat on its hands for two and a half plus months.
Wanted to be sure you saw this op-ed by House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) published by TIME Ideas today reflecting on his friendship with his beloved colleague Congressman John Lewis.
For nearly three months, Senate Republicans have obstructed passage of the Heroes Act, critical legislation passed by the House on May 15 that responds to the coronavirus crisis. While they have failed to provide relief to Americans, this crisis has worsened.
Last night’s announcement that the 2020 Census will be cut short before its work is done is yet another example of this Administration’s blatant assault on our Constitution and our democracy. Only six in ten people have been counted so far, and it is critical that the Census record every person living in the country so that taxpayer resources can be distributed equitably and Congressional representation can be fairly apportioned. This is mandated by our Constitution and set in law.
