I think that the Speaker does not want a government shutdown, [Republican Leader] McConnell has indicated that he doesn’t wasn't a government shutdown, and none of the rest of us in the leadership want a government shutdown.
I am pleased that the House has passed the National Defense Authorization Act for 2015, critical legislation to support our military that the Congress has never failed to enact before the end of the year.
Thank you very much, Leader Pelosi, and let me join you in congratulating [Rep.] Maxine Waters on her leadership [as] the Ranking Member on the Financial Services Committee and all the Members of the Financial Services Committee, the [Ranking Member] of our Small Business Committee [Rep. Nydia M. Velázquez], all of whom have worked so very hard on this issue and understand the consequences of inaction.
My heart goes out to the family of Eric Garner, who continue to seek justice for his tragic death on July 17.
It is very disappointing that the Republican Majority in the House wasted Congress’s time today on a partisan bill that will undermine the President’s executive actions to strengthen our borders, keep families together, and focus enforcement efforts on criminals.
Everybody in that body believes the immigration system is broken.
