Hoyer Statement on the Grand Jury Decision Regarding the Death of Eric Garner

WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement on the grand jury decision regarding the death of Eric Garner:

“My heart goes out to the family of Eric Garner, who continue to seek justice for his tragic death on July 17.  Anyone who has seen the video of his encounter with NYPD officers ought to be shocked and disgusted by what transpired that day.  Attorney General Holder is right to launch a federal investigation into whether Mr. Garner’s civil rights were violated, and I support efforts to hold law enforcement more accountable for the tactics they employ when confronting individuals who are unarmed.  Law enforcement agencies have a primary duty to protect the lives and legal rights of all people – regardless of race, color, or income level – with whom they come into contact, including individuals suspected of violating the law.  I remain deeply concerned that this duty was not carried out in this instance.”
