WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on President Obama's nomination of Denise Turner Roth as the next Administrator of the General Services Administration:

We are writing in response to Science, Space and Technology Committee Chairman Lamar Smith’s (R-Texas) op-ed “If everything is a priority, nothing is” (May 18).

Today should have been a joyful day for immigrant families across the country, when undocumented parents with children who are American citizens would have been able to begin applying for deferred action through the Administration’s new DAPA program, halting their risk of deportation.  

I thank Secretary Castro for joining the Task force today to discuss how HUD is working to expand access to housing, help more Americans attain homeownership, and alleviate poverty in our communities.

Today, I join in marking the fiftieth anniversary of the launch of Head Start, one of the Johnson Administration's key anti-poverty initiatives and still one of the most important investments we make toward closing the achievement gap.
