Today, the House voted to disapprove of the Trump Administration’s ill-conceived decision to allow the sale of sensitive military equipment and munitions to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, which continue to prosecute a war in Yemen whose main outcome has been an unmitigated humanitarian disaster and military stalemate.
This afternoon, I was called to preside over the House after Ranking Member Collins and Republican Members chose to play games with the rules rather than allow an honest debate over the racist words used by President Trump.
Our asylum laws, enacted by Congress on behalf of the American people, are clear: those fleeing horrific violence or disaster are permitted to present themselves at our borders and ask for an asylum hearing.
Democrats brought to the Floor this week a defense authorization bill fully in line with longstanding tradition of supporting our military and providing an open process for both sides to offer amendments and have their defense priorities considered.
I’m pleased that the House today came together to pass a permanent extension of the 9/11 Victims’ Compensation Fund in order to ensure that those who courageously worked to rescue victims and respond to the attacks of September 11, 2001, and their aftermath receive the compensation that they and their families are due.
Even after the Supreme Court ruled that the Administration had not sufficiently explained why it was attempting to add a question on citizenship to the 2020 Census, and therefore the census should move forward without it, reports indicate that President Trump will continue to ignore the law and seek to undermine the accuracy of the count.
I was outraged to learn that officials in Puerto Rico fraudulently awarded federal money to well-connected contractors. These charges are serious, and there must be a thorough investigation.
Today, a federal appeals court will hear oral arguments in a case that will have tremendous impact on millions of American families.
Millions of Americans are working hard just to make ends meet, and a full-time job earning minimum wage no longer supports a family in the middle class.
Once again, the monthly jobs report shows our economy’s resilience. But the jobs number still fails to capture the anxiety of workers and their families barely getting by as wage growth once again fell short. Too many of our people have lost hope that they will get ahead.
