WASHINGTON, DC – House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the Trump Administration announced a new rule to detain migrant children and families indefinitely:
President Trump ought to be broadly and strongly condemned for suggesting that American Jews or any group could be considered disloyal to our country if they do not vote for Republicans or for this president.
I remain deeply disappointed that the Israeli government reversed the policy announced by Ambassador Ron Dermer that ‘out of respect for the U.S. Congress and the great alliance between Israel and America, we would not deny entry to any Member of Congress into Israel.
The decision of the Israeli government to deny entry to Israel by two Members of Congress is outrageous, regardless of their itinerary.  This action is contrary to the statement and assurances to me by Israel’s ambassador to the United States that ‘out of respect for the U.S. Congress and the great alliance between Israel and America, we would not deny entry to any Member of Congress into Israel.’  That representation was not true.
House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05), Rep. Donald Payne Jr. (NJ-10), Rep. Don Beyer (VA-08), Rep. Debbie Dingell (MI-12), Rep. Anthony Brown (MD-04), survivors, and advocates for change held a press conference in the U.S. Capitol today to call on the Republican-led Senate to take action on H.R. 8, the Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2019, legislation passed by the House that requires background checks on all firearm sales.

This nation was, in large part, built by the legal immigrants who arrived on our shores seeking a better life.  That’s why maintaining a strong legal immigration system is so important and beneficial: immigrants contribute to our economy by creating jobs and strengthen our communities by giving back.
I stand in solidarity with the Russian people and particularly protesters in Moscow seeking to restore democracy to their country through free and fair elections and the right to seek electoral choice.
For the second time in two days, Americans have watched in horror as our fellow citizens have been murdered in what can only be described as domestic terror attacks.
I am pleased to join so many House Democrats in traveling to Israel to reaffirm our support for a critical U.S. ally and to continue learning about the opportunities and the challenges facing Israel and the Middle East.
Once again, a community in America is heartbroken by a mass shooting that has taken the lives of far too many. Families and friends are forced to mourn for loved ones taken far too soon.
