Ahead of GOP leadership elections, House Republicans continue to be deeply divided over the Party’s path forward. The Hill reports today on serious concerns that many Republicans have over the intraparty warfare. Here’s a look at what some of their Members are saying:
We wanted to be sure you saw today’s Op-Ed in The Hill by Dave Cote, chairman and CEO of Honeywell International Inc., calling on Republicans to engage in “true leadership” and end their ideological attacks against the Export-Import Bank that are putting “American companies at a competitive disadvantage and prospects for growth and jobs at risk.”
As you could have guessed, Senate Republicans’ CR defunding Planned Parenthood was rejected this afternoon with eight Republican Senators voting against it. We all knew it wouldn’t pass, and a look at the headlines this afternoon should serve as a reminder for Republicans that it’s time to set political games aside and work with Democrats to pass a clean, short-term CR that provides us time to reach a budget agreement. They have just four legislative days left to act responsibly.
What happens when Republicans shut down the Export-Import Bank and cut off financing assistance to U.S. companies? Those companies will look for that assistance elsewhere. After announcing the loss of 500 U.S. jobs just last week, General Electric announced today that it has reached an agreement with Britain’s export credit agency on a deal that could create up to 1,000 jobs… in Britain.
As the House returns to session today, take a look at this morning’s NY Times editorial, which sums up Republicans’ shutdown saga quite well: “Congressional Republicans are again playing brinkmanship with the budget — some are even threatening to shut down the government — in order to score ideological and political points.”
