Shutdown
Trump’s Government Shutdown

On December 21, 2018, President Trump and House Republicans shut down parts of the federal government in a shameful, partisan effort to force taxpayers to fund an expensive and ineffective border wall. As a result, 800,000 hardworking federal employees are either furloughed or forced to work without a paycheck for the duration of this shutdown. Millions of Americans are being affected as government services have been suspended, including having their tax refunds delayed, having home loan approvals delayed, seeing decreased security at airports, and being put at risk as national parks operate without staff or guides. House Democrats are working to reopen government, but President Trump and the Republican-led Senate have refused to take action to end this costly shutdown.

Today, 163 House Republicans voted against a resolution that says shutting down the government is stupid and bad policy.
This resolution is so simple. Shutdown is stupid. That's all it says.
After five weeks of an unnecessary, costly, and painful shutdown, the american people have been reminded how critical the work our federal employees perform is to our national security and economic security. Americans were horrified to learn that many civilian federal employees live paycheck to paycheck.
Frankly, what I think the President does is he states facts to conform to his beliefs, as opposed to having his beliefs based upon facts.
For 35 days, President Trump and Congressional Republicans kept the government shut down, leaving 800,000 federal employees furloughed or working without pay, damaging our nation’s economy, and undermining national security.
Today’s CBO outlook shows the American people what is already evident: Donald Trump will go down in history as the worst president in terms of fiscal irresponsibility.
Today’s CBO estimate confirms what we already know: shutting down the government is a failed policy that harms our country and our people.
This evening, the House passed a short term continuing resolution to reopen the government and allow 800,000 federal employees to get back to work serving the American people and receive the pay they are due.
Today, House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) and Gerry Connolly (VA-11) introduced the Federal Civilian Workforce Pay Raise Fairness Act of 2019, which would bring the 2019 pay increase for civilian federal employees in line with the raise given to members of the military.
While I am relieved that the President is finally willing to allow 800,000 federal employees get back to work and receive the paychecks they are due – and restore critical services to millions of Americans – it is deeply angering that he inflicted deep uncertainty and economic insecurity on Americans across the country for no reason for the past thirty-five days.
