WASHINGTON, DC – House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) delivered remarks today at the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe Parliamentary Assembly. Below are his remarks as prepared for delivery:
The President said he believed a military strike at this moment would be disproportionate, and his decision to cancel the strike was the right decision.
I remain extremely concerned by this Administration’s reckless approach to the serious threat from Iran; in fact, its lack of strategy has led us to this dangerous point.
I stand in solidarity with the people of Hong Kong who are courageously taking to the streets to defend democracy and freedom of expression.
Today, people around the world stand in solidarity with the victims and survivors of the Tiananmen Square Massacre, who stood for freedom and democracy in China thirty years ago.

It has been longstanding practice that Congress has a role in approving or blocking arms sales to foreign militaries.
Yet again, we see that this President and his team have no clear strategy on how to deal effectively with Iran.
I was disturbed that President Trump hosted at the White House a leader who has subverted democracy in his country and suppressed freedom of the press and civil institutions.
I join in celebrating the seventy-first anniversary of the rebirth of a Jewish state in the ancient homeland of the Jewish people.  Israel has been a marvel to the world, weaving from a history of adversity a miraculous tapestry of resilience, innovation, and the steadfast pursuit of the ancient prophets’ dream of peace and justice on Earth.
Iran continues to be a malign actor in its region and around the world, sowing instability in Syria and Yemen, positioning forces across Israel’s northern border, supporting violent terrorism, and threatening the United States and our allies.
