Hoyer Statement on House Republicans’ Latest Attempt to Distract from the President’s Abuse of Power
The resolution pushed today by House Republicans is nothing more than an attempt to distract the American people from their refusal to answer the question confronting our nation: is it acceptable for a President to openly seek foreign help for his re-election and put his own private interests ahead of our country’s interests and our national security?
There's rightly been broad bipartisan shock and condemnation that president trump would so recklessly endanger America’s allies, permit the release of thousands of violent ISIS extremists, and give to Vladimir Putin’s aims in Syria. In short, he just opened the door for ISIS to reclaim some power. any terrorist attack they now take part in will be the direct result of this action. President Trump has betrayed the trust, in my opinion, of the American people.
This is a dangerous move, doubling down on an abandonment of our allies and fueling instability and violence in Syria that threatens to return ISIS to power and advantage Iran and Russia.
It is beyond belief that the Trump Administration would side with Russia in thwarting a U.N. Security Council statement explicitly condemning Turkey’s invasion of Syria.
It is shameful that the Trump Administration would so recklessly abandon a reliable ally and allow for conditions that could return ISIS to power in parts of Syria. Actions in Syria, as we have seen, have consequences that reach far beyond its borders, threatening our own country and our allies in Europe and Israel.
It has now been a year since Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi was brutally murdered by assassins linked to the Saudi ruling regime.
The memorandum released by the White House this morning is damning. This presidency has been characterized by corruption, contempt for the rule of law, and the betrayal of public trust.
The attack on the Saudi oil facilities is not only an attack on Saudi Arabia but on the stability of the world economy. That may well be its intent. We do not yet know who perpetrated this attack, but whoever did this ought to suffer consequences after a proper investigation of what actually happened. Any response must be well thought-out and strategic.
I remain deeply disappointed that the Israeli government reversed the policy announced by Ambassador Ron Dermer that ‘out of respect for the U.S. Congress and the great alliance between Israel and America, we would not deny entry to any Member of Congress into Israel.
The decision of the Israeli government to deny entry to Israel by two Members of Congress is outrageous, regardless of their itinerary. This action is contrary to the statement and assurances to me by Israel’s ambassador to the United States that ‘out of respect for the U.S. Congress and the great alliance between Israel and America, we would not deny entry to any Member of Congress into Israel.’ That representation was not true.
