As Muslim Americans mark the end of Ramadan with the celebration of Eid-al-Fitr, they will be doing so without the comfort of gathering with families, friends, and neighbors. Over the past month, the uniqueness of this year’s Ramadan observed in isolation has surely been challenging. All Americans now know this same sadness, as holidays, graduations, births, funerals, and other special moments have occurred under stay-at-home orders and with social and physical distancing measures in place.
House Democrats have consistently stood shoulder-to-shoulder with the people of Hong Kong, who so desperately want to preserve the freedom and democracy they have enjoyed for generations, now threatened by the government in Beijing. It is no surprise that President Xi and other Chinese leaders feel that they have an opportunity to try to stamp out democracy and freedom of expression in Hong Kong; President Trump has made no secret of his support for President Xi, even calling him a ‘friend of mine’ and an ‘incredible guy.

WASHINGTON, DC – House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) sent a letter to the Chair and Vice Chair of the National Governors Association, Governor Larry Hogan of Maryland and Governor Andrew Cuomo of New York, respectively, following up on his previous request that they direct the leaders of all fifty states, the District of Columbia, and U.S. territories to collect demographic data on racial disparities and the coronavirus.
This President continues to believe he is above the law and oversight, emulating many of the foreign autocrats America has opposed throughout its history.
Wanted to be sure you saw this Washington Post editorial today in support of the House moving forward with a resolution to allow for remote voting and virtual committee proceedings.
Members on both sides of the aisle have urged we act to ensure the House can continue legislating during this pandemic. Rather than moving forward with a Democratic proposal last month, we formed this task force to give bipartisan compromise another chance.
