President Bush stood before the American people today and said that there are ‘mixed signals’ about the state of the U.S. economy.

WASHINGTON - House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (MD) made the following remarks today at a press conference with the bicameral Congressional Democratic Leadership (as prepared for delivery):
 
"America is in a better place than we were one year ago today, and the fact that Democrats control the Congress
Virtually everyone who closely and objectively observes Congress agrees that Democrats have had a very productive year, instigated substantial progress on key priorities, and begun to move our nation in a new direction.

WASHINGTON, DC – House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement this morning regarding the assassination of former Pakistani Prime Minister and opposition leader Benazir Bhutto:
I am deeply saddened to learn today of Chairman Lantos’ illness. He has been a wise and thoughtful leader in Congress since he was first elected in 1980, and his unwaivering commitment to democracy and basic human rights will be greatly missed.
The anemic job growth in today’s Labor Department report for December is just further evidence that the Bush Administration’s economic program is failing the American people.
Mr. Speaker, I believe that every single member of this body – on both sides of the aisle – agrees that we must protect middle-income Americans from the alternative minimum tax, the parallel tax system enacted in 1969 to ensure that wealthy Americans pay their fair share.

WASHINGTON – House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer released the following statement tonight after Senate Republicans blocked for a second time a fiscally responsible patch of the Alternative Minimum Tax.  Senate Democrats again supported the House-passed fiscally responsible AMT bill:
 
So far this year, a record 25 million toys have been recalled for hazards ranging from dangerously small magnets, to excessive levels of toxic lead, to other choking dangers.
