WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) delivered the following remarks today at a press conference with House and Senate Democratic leaders, where he discussed today’s King v. Burwell Supreme Court decision and the need for Republicans to reauthorize the Export-Import Bank and take action on the Highway Trust Fund:

Today, the Supreme Court affirmed what those who wrote the Affordable Care Act already knew – that subsidies to help Americans afford health insurance premiums are to be made available to all Americans, whether they get their health care through the federal marketplace or through state-based marketplaces.

There is no more important act in our democracy than casting one’s vote and having one’s voice heard equally in our government, which is why I’m pleased that Reps. Terri Sewell, John Lewis, Linda Sanchez, and Judy Chu introduced legislation today to restore the voting rights protections struck down by the Supreme Court two years ago this week.

I am disappointed that Republicans continue to pursue legislation that ignores the dangers of climate change and undermines our nation’s efforts to develop cleaner energy alternatives.

I was very privileged to join all of my colleagues in a visit to Karnes [County Residential Center].

For too long, the draconian cuts of the sequester have strangled our investments to keep America Number One in the global economy and to ensure our national security.

One of the things we see here is a stark example of why comprehensive immigration reform is absolutely essential.

Today’s CBO report makes clear that repealing the Affordable Care Act, as Republicans have consistently voted to do, would explode the deficit, cause millions to lose their insurance coverage, and raise costs for seniors on Medicare.

On this day, 150 years ago, former slaves in Texas rejoiced at their freedom, the last in America to hear the news, and ever since that day Juneteenth has marked the anniversary of emancipation for the millions whose ancestors suffered the unthinkable horrors of slavery.  I join in celebrating this day, which serves as a reminder to all of us of our shared responsibility to recognize and protect the equal rights and equal dignity of every person.

The encyclical released by Pope Francis today on the environment is a powerful call to planetary stewardship and a reminder of human consequences of pollution, climate change, and degradation of our natural resources.
