House Democrats Take Action to Reassert Congress’s Authority on Matters of War and Peace
This week, the House took action to reassert Congress’s constitutional authority on matters of war. Following passage of a war powers resolution earlier this month, the House passed Rep. Barbara Lee’s amendment to repeal the 2002 authorization for the use of force in Iraq, which was intended to enable the removal of Saddam Hussein, but is still used today to justify the use of American military force in Iraq against Iran. The House also passed Rep. Ro Khanna’s amendment to prohibit the use of federal funds for military action in or against Iran absent Congressional authorization. Iran is a dangerous enemy of freedom and a sponsor of terror, but President Trump does not have a unilateral authority to take our country into war against Iran. He must work with Congress to address this threat.

Hoyer Statement on the Trump Administration's Medicaid Block Grant Plan
As a candidate, President Trump promised the American people that he would not seek cuts to Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security.  With today’s announcement, he’s broken that promise yet again.  Fundamentally changing Medicaid by allowing states to take away health coverage and cut health benefits will force low-income Americans, seniors, rural communities, those with disabilities, low income pregnant women facing staggering maternal mortality rates, and Americans seeking treatment for opioid addiction to pay the price.

Hoyer Floor Remarks on Lee and Khanna Amendments
Madam Speaker, I want to thank Rep. Lee and Rep. Khanna for their continued efforts to prevent American forces from being sent into combat without Congressional authorization. Americans have now experienced a generation of war abroad to prevent terror at home. In Afghanistan and Iraq, our troops have fought courageously. Their families have sacrificed. Their friends and neighbors have waited anxiously for news of their safe return home. Many, tragically, did not return. We hold them in our hearts today as we engage in this critical debate about the nature of Congress’s role in making consequential decisions of war and peace.

Hoyer: Statement on Trump’s Policies Resulting in Slowed GDP Growth
This morning, the Bureau of Economic Analysis provided further evidence that supports what we already know: the Trump economy is one broken promise after another. After promising 6% GDP growth would result from his tax cuts for the wealthy, growth has actually slowed to 2.3% from 2.8% a year earlier.  Rather than causing a flood of business investment that would trickle down to workers, today’s report shows that, in the wake of his tax cuts, business investment has declined for 3 consecutive quarters.
