Shutdown

Trump’s Government Shutdown
On December 21, 2018, President Trump and House Republicans shut down parts of the federal government in a shameful, partisan effort to force taxpayers to fund an expensive and ineffective border wall. As a result, 800,000 hardworking federal employees are either furloughed or forced to work without a paycheck for the duration of this shutdown. Millions of Americans are being affected as government services have been suspended, including having their tax refunds delayed, having home loan approvals delayed, seeing decreased security at airports, and being put at risk as national parks operate without staff or guides. House Democrats are working to reopen government, but President Trump and the Republican-led Senate have refused to take action to end this costly shutdown.

For the latest on the shutdown, see updates below:

So ICYMI, there’s a growing number of Senate Republicans calling on its leadership to reopen government and end the Trump shutdown while Democrats and Republicans continue to negotiate on border security. As a reminder, they are joining Senators Collins, Gardner, and Murkowski who want to see action to reopen government now. Take a look:

By refusing to reopen government while both parties continue to discuss the best way to secure our borders, President Trump is inflicting great harm on 800,000 federal employees and the American people they serve
The snow isn’t the only thing piling up in Washington. A look at the headlines over the weekend shows pressure is mounting on Senate Republicans to take up the House-passed Republican bills to reopen government and end the longest government shutdown in U.S. history. Take a look:

Today, 800,000 federal employees across the country will miss their first paycheck since President Trump shut down the government.
No one should have to go without a paycheck.  No one should have to go without a paycheck just because the President thinks he can bully Congress into giving him what he wants.
The Republicans have begun taken hostage not only 800,000 people who work for the federal government – expecting them to work for no pay to protect our borders, to protect our seas, to protect our food – and so they've taken hostage the government of the United States one more time.
Our position is [Republicans] got to stop using the shutting down of the people's government as a strategy to attain our objectives.
Continuing our efforts to end the Trump shutdown, House Democrats – joined by a growing number of Republicans – today passed Fiscal Year 2019 appropriations bills to reopen parts of government that provide 40 million Americans facing hunger with nutrition assistance, restore pay to security agents at airports and federal aviation safety inspectors, put an end to delays for federally backed mortgage applications, and avert a shutdown crisis for low-income rental housing assistance.
[Democrats] have been saying all along is look, Mr. President, there's a policy difference here, and we're prepared to discuss that policy because we want to have secure borders, and therefore we're prepared to talk about that, including additional sums to assure the border security.
Today, House Democrats and eight responsible House Republicans passed legislation to reopen part of the government, just as we did last week, in an effort to put our nation’s federal employees back to work and give them the paychecks they are due.
