President Trump's FY2021 Budget

The President released his budget proposal for Fiscal Year 2021 and made his priorities clear: he continues to put the wealthiest Americans first at the expense of working families. The budget proposal makes tax cuts for the wealthy permanent while breaking his promises to working families on health care, the economy, and other areas that help Americans get ahead and keep them safe.

Trump's budget includes extreme spending cuts--including Medicare and Medicaid--and makes fantasy economic projections that the Congressional Budget Office and other experts have called unrealistic. Yet, even taking those into account, the President’s budget still does not balance over the next 10 years.

“When I saw the President’s proposed budget today, I felt an immense sense of relief – relief that there is absolutely no chance of his ruthless cuts to critical programs ever becoming law. Slashing billions from Medicare and Medicaid will only make it harder for Americans to access the healthcare they need. Cutting nutrition assistance and Social Security benefits for the disabled won’t enable people to get back on their feet financially.
“This administration will tout a 12% increase in the VA budget but ignores a much worse reality-- this budget will lead to less food on the plates of struggling veteran families, no new vouchers for homeless veterans, and millions of veterans cut off from key social programs targeted by the President.
"Instead of serving as a blueprint for the future, the Trump budget seeks to slash the funding our small businesses rely on to stay competitive and innovative in a 21st century economy.
“While I am still reviewing the President’s Fiscal Year 2021 budget request, I am deeply concerned and disappointed with the destructive cuts to important civilian R&D and science and technology programs it contains. While there are bright spots, overall this proposal damages vital parts of our nation’s federal science and technology enterprise that drive our economy, keep our nation competitive, and protect our environment.
“Once again, the Trump Administration has failed to put its money where its mouth is when it comes to improving the lives of hardworking Americans.  The President’s budget slashes funding for critical programs and continues to prioritize his special projects above the American people.
“The Trump Administration’s budget proposal for the Department of Homeland Security prioritizes the President’s draconian immigration campaign promises at the expense of our country’s core homeland security operations.
“It seeks to unjustifiably decrease funding for FEMA, TSA, CISA and the Coast Guard to increase funding for immigration enforcement operations and detention capacity to detain thousands more children and adults and for the President’s border wall.
“Like the President’s previous budgets, this year’s request is a waste of the paper it’s printed on. Proposing such reckless cuts to our critical foreign policy tools isn’t a serious proposal. If this draconian budget were enacted, it would weaken our security and leadership around the world. That’s how we know that this budget is nothing but red meat for the President’s political base. Congress will again reject this proposal in resounding bipartisan fashion...
“President Trump’s budget proposal is another shocking demonstration of the administration’s willingness to break its promises to the American people. Just two days after President Trump pledged that he would not cut Social Security or Medicare, the president released a FY 2021 budget proposal that cuts more than $1 trillion over the next decade from Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security...
