National Security

Keeping America safe is Congress’ most important duty. Democrats are focused on strengthening U.S. national security, defending democracy, and restoring America’s leadership in the world.

Democrats are committed to enhancing our national security and advancing key American interests, while supporting human rights and democratic values at home and abroad.

In the 117th Congress, Democrats passed a bipartisan defense authorization bill that strengthened our national security, ensured our military personnel have the resources they need to defend our country, and bolstered our allies and international interests. In the 118th Congress, Democrats will build on these gains by continuing to help President Biden keep Americans safe.

We will continue to work with the Administration to provide our diplomats and our troops with the tools needed to carry out their missions abroad safely and effectively. This will include continuing to work with our allies to ensure Russia’s illegal and unprovoked invasion of Ukraine ends in defeat for Putin, that America maintains its competitiveness against China’s authoritarian challenges, and that the world is free from threats posed by Iran.

Today's sentencing sends a strong and unequivocal message to terrorists that they will be held accountable for their actions, and that they will not win.

With his Administration's action today, President Obama is now the first president to ever enforce Congressionally-mandated sanctions on Iran. This hard-hitting action demonstrates how serious the President and the Democratic Congress are about halting Iran's dangerous pursuit of nuclear weapons. The Comprehensive Iran Sanctions, Accountability, and Divestment Act, passed by this Congress and implemented by President Obama, brings strong economic pressure to bear on Iran, sending an unambiguous message to the regime in Tehran about the high costs of their nuclear pursuit.

The Republicans unveiled their "Pledge to America" last week and, just as we thought, it contained no new ideas and was a return to the "exact same" failed agenda as President Bush. Their agenda to return to their previous policies makes it clear who they stand with—big corporations and special interests, instead of middle class families.

Today Republicans unveiled their agenda calling for the exact same failed policies of the past. The national security agenda presented, once again, does not focus on the real fight against terrorism and the places that give them sanctuary and put our nation at risk.

As we did nine years ago, today we stand united as one people: united in memory of the dead of September 11th, 2001; united in awe at the heroic sacrifices that graced that dark day, and so many since; and united in resolve to defend our nation and the ideals that animate its spirit.

This week House Democrats salute the troops and veterans who have endured great sacrifice to keep our nation safe. Democrats have stood up for our men and women in uniform time and again, making sure we not only protect our homeland, but take care of those who sacrifice so much defending it.

This evening, President Obama delivered an address to mark the end of America's combat mission in Iraq. The Obama Administration and the Democratic Congress pledged to end the war in Iraq, and this month's completion of the responsible redeployment of American combat troops demonstrates that that pledge is being kept. After seven years, the war in Iraq has seen awe-inspiring displays of sacrifice from American and coalition forces; and tonight, above all, we call to memory the more than 4,400 American troops who died in Iraq, along with the more than 30,000 who suffered injuries. We vow to honor their memories, and to honor the compact with all Americans who served, particularly when it comes to providing returning veterans the health care they need and the educational opportunities they deserve.

More than seven years after the beginning of the war in Iraq, the last American combat brigade heads home today. I join all Americans in thanking our brave men and women in uniform for the courage and the sacrifice they have shown, year after year. Together we also mourn the loss of all those who lost their lives in the service of their country.
