National Security

Keeping America safe is Congress’ most important duty. Democrats are focused on strengthening U.S. national security, defending democracy, and restoring America’s leadership in the world.

Democrats are committed to enhancing our national security and advancing key American interests, while supporting human rights and democratic values at home and abroad.

In the 117th Congress, Democrats passed a bipartisan defense authorization bill that strengthened our national security, ensured our military personnel have the resources they need to defend our country, and bolstered our allies and international interests. In the 118th Congress, Democrats will build on these gains by continuing to help President Biden keep Americans safe.

We will continue to work with the Administration to provide our diplomats and our troops with the tools needed to carry out their missions abroad safely and effectively. This will include continuing to work with our allies to ensure Russia’s illegal and unprovoked invasion of Ukraine ends in defeat for Putin, that America maintains its competitiveness against China’s authoritarian challenges, and that the world is free from threats posed by Iran.

I’m pleased that both parties in the House and Senate have reached agreement on sanctions legislation that will hold Russia and Iran accountable for their destabilizing actions around the world.

Today marks six months since President Trump’s inauguration.

Republicans control the House, the Senate, and the White House, and they have a responsibility to govern and deliver results for the American people. Yet, over halfway through the year, Republicans have no major legislative accomplishments.

Reports that President Trump met privately with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Germany last week, without any other American officials present, and failed to disclose that meeting until now, raise serious questions about what was discussed and whether their conversation included any promises regarding the easing of U.S. sanctions.

Today, Democrats and Republicans in the House came together to pass legislation supporting the work of our men and women in uniform.

This amendment is not about defense. This amendment is about politics.”

The amendment to the defense authorization bill offered by Rep. Hartzler and made in order today by the Rules Committee not only tells transgender Americans that they are not welcome in our military but also disparages all who serve and wish to serve under our flag.

I’m continuing to have conversations with my Republican colleagues regarding the Russia sanctions bill.

It has been more than three weeks since the Senate, by a vote of 98-2, passed a bipartisan bill imposing tough new sanctions on Russia for its interference in our election.

If reports that North Korea has successfully tested an intercontinental ballistic missile are true, it highlights the serious and ongoing threat that North Korea poses to the United States and our allies.
