*Government Shutdown

Some of the impacts of the shutdown – such as closing of National Parks and furloughs for federal employees – are more obvious to the American people.  Some impacts are less noticeable but can be just as harmful,  as the New York Times reports:

“Once again, the twelfth day of the shutdown of government of the American people, the twelfth day of having people out of work, expected to be paid but not working. 

Well, if Republicans won’t listen to us, maybe they’ll heed yesterday’s letter from the Chamber, AFL-CIO, and United Way Worldwide. As the letter states, they may not agree on much but they all believe we must end the shutdown and ensure America pays its bills.  The Hill reports:

“We’re now in the twelfth day of the government shutdown. We are just a few days from risking the creditworthiness of our country. It is time to open up this government [and] get government workers back to work serving the American people.

“Thank you, Mr. Speaker. Many of my colleagues on either side of the aisle have stated their preference for, as the Gentlelady from North Carolina said, opening the government. They want to open the government as soon as possible and would vote for a clean bill.

“I think the votes are there to open up government and I think the votes are there to make sure the nation pays its debts. … In this case, however, both sides say they want government open. Both sides say they don't want the government to default. So it seems that we're in agreement. We ought to have a bill on the Floor to do both of those and pass it today. Unfortunately, that hasn't happened yet, but it can happen today and I hope it does.”

Republicans haven’t been convinced to reopen the government after seeing the impacts on families across the nation, but maybe they’ll change their tune after hearing from businesses that are also seeing the detrimental impact of the Republican government shutdown.
