Fiscal Responsibility

Over the years, Democrats have shown our commitment to restoring fiscal responsibility by taking actions that have reduced our national deficit while investing in the American people’s priorities.

Over the years, Democrats have shown our commitment to restoring fiscal responsibility by taking actions that have reduced our national deficit while investing in the American people’s priorities. During the 117th Congress, House Democrats delivered the landmark Inflation Reduction Act, which will reduce the deficit by over $300 billion while lowering health care and energy costs and taking action on climate change. In sharp contrast, Republicans jammed their 2017 Trump Tax Scam through Congress without a single hearing, gifting trillions of dollars in unpaid-for tax handouts to the wealthiest Americans and large corporations while leaving our nation with ballooning deficits. They have repeatedly held our economy hostage to benefit their irresponsible ideological agenda, whether creating artificial “fiscal cliffs,” shutting down the government, or bringing our nation to the brink of defaulting on its obligations. With other landmark legislation delivered during the 117th Congress, including the American Rescue Plan, the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, and the CHIPS and Science Act, Democrats have worked to invest in economic recovery, job creation, all while cutting the deficit in half last year. Democrats are committed to continuing our work to restore sound, long-term fiscal management so future generations can afford to invest in opportunities, secure the American Dream, and ensure workers have the tools to Make It In America.

House Republicans continue to waste time on political messaging bills that will not become law and do not help the American people.  This week, House Republicans are taking a page out of the 112th Congress’ playbook and are voting for the 37th time to repeal the Affordable Care Act, a vote that would take away important patient protections from millions of Americans.

“Pretending that you are going to take hostage the credit worthiness of the United States of America to get your deal done is irresponsible, not realistic, and we are not going to deal on the debt

MESSAGE FROM THE DEMOCRATIC WHIP

This week, House Republicans passed their “Pay China First” bill that places our nation at risk of defaulting on our obligations. This partisan bill mandates paying China and other holders of our debt before our other legal obligations, including paying our troops, veterans benefits, and seniors’ health care.

Looks like it’s not just Democrats calling for a return to ‘regular order’ in the budget process.  Today, POLITICO highlights several prominent Republican Senators who are joining Democrats in calling for action to complete work on a budget:

"Jobs was clearly on the President's mind and his focus.

“The sad thing is that this is not a serious response. This is an irresponsible response.

“I thank the Ranking Member [Rep. Sander Levin (D-Mi.)]. I rise partly in sadness, wholly in disappointment, that we are playing this game. How sad.

“I think [debt prioritization] is not a serious effort and I think the Democrats are going to be overwhelmingly, if not unanimously opposed to it.

“Mr. Speaker, I rise once again to call on Congress to replace the dangerous and irrational sequester with a big and balanced deficit solution

This week, House Republicans are once again putting the U.S. at risk of defaulting on its obligations, and another downgrade of our credit rating. The “Pay China First” bill that Republicans are bringing to the House Floor this week is not a real solution to our nation’s fiscal situation.
