Fiscal Responsibility

Over the years, Democrats have shown our commitment to restoring fiscal responsibility by taking actions that have reduced our national deficit while investing in the American people’s priorities.

Over the years, Democrats have shown our commitment to restoring fiscal responsibility by taking actions that have reduced our national deficit while investing in the American people’s priorities. During the 117th Congress, House Democrats delivered the landmark Inflation Reduction Act, which will reduce the deficit by over $300 billion while lowering health care and energy costs and taking action on climate change. In sharp contrast, Republicans jammed their 2017 Trump Tax Scam through Congress without a single hearing, gifting trillions of dollars in unpaid-for tax handouts to the wealthiest Americans and large corporations while leaving our nation with ballooning deficits. They have repeatedly held our economy hostage to benefit their irresponsible ideological agenda, whether creating artificial “fiscal cliffs,” shutting down the government, or bringing our nation to the brink of defaulting on its obligations. With other landmark legislation delivered during the 117th Congress, including the American Rescue Plan, the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, and the CHIPS and Science Act, Democrats have worked to invest in economic recovery, job creation, all while cutting the deficit in half last year. Democrats are committed to continuing our work to restore sound, long-term fiscal management so future generations can afford to invest in opportunities, secure the American Dream, and ensure workers have the tools to Make It In America.

Today, Republicans are expected to get an earful from financial experts and economists criticizing the reckless game they're playing with the US economy by not taking action to ensure America can pay its bills. According to the Hill:

More evidence that the American people are fed up with Republicans shutting down government as a failed tactic to dismantle the Affordable Care Act.

“I am pleased that President Obama has nominated Janet Yellen to serve as the next Chair of the Federal Reserve.  She will bring stability to the markets and certainty to our monetary policy.  As one of our nation’s most experienced economists, Janet has played an important role in setting monetary policy for over three decades.  Her nomination shatters yet another glass ceiling, as the first woman nominated to serve as Chair of the Federal Reserve.

Today, Rep. Ted Yoho (R-FL) said, “Somebody needs to convince me why we need to raise the debt ceiling.”

Ok, take your pick:

“The previous speaker said that the shutdown should be unacceptable. I agree with that. And we could all, within the next half an hour, vote to make the unacceptable not the policy that we are pursuing.

Republicans’ economic games are having a real-world impact on Americans’ economic confidence, according to a new poll by Gallup.  According to a report in The Hill:

Wall Street, business leaders, and economists have all called for immediate action by Congress to ensure that America pays its bills and doesn’t default on its financial obligations. The latest warning comes from the National Association of Manufacturers, who sent a letter today emphasizing that the “United States must meet our financial obligations to ensure global investors’ continuing confidence in the nation’s creditworthiness.”  We couldn’t agree more.

Take note, House Republicans: yet another poll shows the American people oppose your strategy to shut down the government over Obamacare.  According to a new poll by United Technologies/National Journal Congressional Connection:

The deadline to act to ensure America pays its bills is fast approaching, but House Republicans are denying how severe the consequences of inaction will be.  Perhaps a report in the Wall Street Journal this morning will help change their minds:

A sampling of editorials from around the country shows House Republicans’ refusal to end the GOP shutdown isn’t playing out so well for them. Some highlights:
