Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer (MD) and Congresswoman Barbara Lee (CA), chair of the Democratic Whip Task Force on Poverty, Income Inequality, and Opportunity, released a statement today on Speaker Ryan’s comments about Americans living in poverty.

Last week, President Obama nominated Judge Merrick Garland to fill the vacancy on the Supreme Court. Despite being well-qualified and highly regarded within the legal community, Senate Republicans have refused to hold a confirmation hearing or an up-or-down vote on Judge Garland. In fact, they won’t even meet with him.  

House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) spoke on the House Floor today, calling on Senate Republicans to give Supreme Court Justice Nominee Merrick Garland fair consideration. 

Not the Republican budget. Despite Speaker Ryan’s call for regular order – which includes passing a budget – and the GOP’s insistence on “no budget, no pay,” we wanted to be sure you saw yesterday’s exchange between Whip Hoyer and Leader McCarthy on the House Floor. During colloquy, Whip Hoyer asked Leader McCarthy when Republicans intend to bring their budget to the Floor. Given GOP division over the budget resolution, you won’t be surprised by Leader McCarthy’s response.

If you were wondering whether Republicans were prepared to be reasonable about President Obama’s Supreme Court nominee, Speaker Ryan’s response should clear it up:

“This has never been about who the nominee is.” [Speaker Ryan, 3/16/16]

So their opposition to the nominee has nothing to do with the nominee… Which means it’s all about partisan posturing.
