Stop us if you've heard this one before...

In one of the most predictable moments of hypocrisy, Majority Leader McConnell is taking a well-traveled road for Republicans – creating debt and then refusing to deal with it. This latest example comes as McConnell told Punchbowl News, “I can’t imagine there will be a single Republican voting to raise the debt ceiling.” Said another way:

Friendly reminder for Leader McConnell on why we need to address the debt limit: Under President Trump, Republicans jammed through the GOP Tax Scam that gave tax cuts to the rich on the backs of the middle class, while adding trillions to the deficit. Then, last year, Republicans and Democrats worked together to confront a deadly pandemic by passing five bills, including the CARES Act and a relief package in December, to ensure the American people had the tools they needed to get through the COVID-19 pandemic and withstand its economic impacts. You don’t get to spend money and then pretend the bills don’t exist.

America is going to pay its bills, and it is wildly irresponsible to suggest otherwise. It’s also wildly irresponsible to ignore the debt your own party helped create and say you won’t vote to address it. Playing games with the debt limit in the past has hurt the economy. Republicans ought to join Democrats and work together to address the debt limit and ensure we meet our obligations.
