Spotted in the halls of the Capitol: 1994

Newt Gingrich in the Capitol today advocating for slashing Social Security? Time to find your JNCO jeans and turn on some TLC because it feels like 1994 in here. Gingrich, who famously advocated for Republicans’ desire to see critical government programs “wither on the vine,” was on hand today as Leader McCarthy previewed an extreme MAGA platform that calls for curtailing Americans’ Constitutional rights, slashing Social Security, and attacking our democracy to the GOP conference.  That isn’t all – Gingrich was a crucial advisor to Republicans as they developed their agenda (point of personal preference, but considering this agenda is basically just what Republicans have been doing this whole time, we’re not really surprised that McCarthy literally recycled last year’s platform name.)

It seems Republicans have dusted off a playbook we’ve seen before (in 2017, 2015, 2012, and 2005 just to provide a few examples) from the shelf: trying to slash Social Security and Medicare programs that bolster seniors’ economic security and ensure millions of working families have access to quality, affordable health care.

While 1994 might be their inspiration, make no mistake: House Republicans are rolling the clock back even further as they criminalize women’s health care and cut programs that help seniors and working families get ahead.
