So much for regular order...
We'll follow regular order, they said. We're going to be open and transparent, they promised. But in a last ditch effort to pass TrumpCare, House GOP leaders are negotiating in the dark of night with the House Freedom Caucus to win them over before tomorrow's vote.
Their Manager’s Amendment wasn't enough, so what are they offering now? Cutting Essential Health Benefits. These so-called "small tweaks" come in the form of cutting maternity care, mental health coverage, and other critical protections. Politico reports:
“White House budget director Mick Mulvaney is working with Rep. Mark Meadows (R-N.C.), chairman of the hard-line conservative coalition, to strike Obamacare’s lengthy list of essential benefits that health plans now have to cover…”.
“Some Republicans have long argued that insurers should be able to sell skimpier coverage that, for example, wouldn't cover maternity or mental health services.”
“Freedom Caucus members, led by Meadows, want at least some parts of Title One of the bill removed. Included in Title One are many of the Affordable Care Act's benefits, like a prohibition on insurers denying coverage over pre-existing conditions and a prohibition on lifetime and annual limits.”
