MESSAGE FROM THE DEMOCRATIC WHIP

This week, Senate Republicans delayed a vote on their TrumpCare bill, but delay is not enough. They must abandon their bill. Their decision came after the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office found the bill would kick 22 million Americans off their health insurance, including 4 million people who would lose their employer-based coverage, and force millions of others to pay more for less coverage and care. The bill would allow discrimination against people with pre-existing conditions by permitting insurers to impose annual and lifetime limits and to charge significantly higher premiums for plans covering essential benefits. It also imposes an “age tax,” allowing older Americans to be charged five times as much for care.

In addition, another report released by the Congressional Budget Office found the Senate TrumpCare bill would cut one out of every three dollars spent on nursing home care, doctor visits, and services for those with disabilities and force more Americans off Medicaid coverage over the next two decades. These cuts would have a real impact on families, which is why I've launched TrumpCareStories.org a website to highlight the stories of Americans who will be harmed by TrumpCare. This week, I spoke with two parents to hear their #TrumpCareStories. Marta and Clay are each caring for children who receive assistance through Medicaid. Marta’s daughter, Caroline, has Rett Syndrome, which requires around the clock nursing care she receives through Medicaid. Clay’s son, Neal, has autism, and was recently diagnosed with adult onset scoliosis. Medicaid provides him with the care necessary so he can live an independent life. On behalf of these families and others across the country, we must defeat TrumpCare.

There is no doubt this bill fails the Jimmy Kimmel test, which Kimmel himself described as being: “no family should be denied medical care, emergency or otherwise, because they can’t afford it.” I continue to urge Republicans to abandon their legislation and will highlight its devastating impact on families. Please continue to share your #TrumpCareStories with me on social media.

I wish you all a safe and restful Fourth of July weekend.

Sincerely yours,

Steny H. Hoyer
