Senate GOP Tax Scam Raises Taxes on Middle-Class Families

Message from the Democratic Whip
Tonight, after making numerous last-minute changes to the bill, Senate Republicans plan to vote on their GOP tax scam bill. We know this bill will raise taxes on millions of middle-class households, add $1.5 trillion dollars to the deficit, and dismantle the Affordable Care Act in order to give tax cuts to the wealthiest Americans and corporations. In addition, the tax scam will trigger a $25 billion cut to Medicare as well as slashing programs such as nutrition assistance, student loans, and border security next year. I continue to urge Republicans to abandon this bill that was negotiated in secret, rushed to the Floor, and will leave the middle class behind.
While they continue to focus all of their attention on this tax cut for the wealthy, Republicans continue to ignore critical issues that must be addressed before the end of the year, including funding the government before December 8. With majorities in the House and Senate and control of the White House, Republicans are fully responsible for keeping the government open. With only five legislative days until the deadline, they still don’t have a plan and there will be no one but themselves to blame if the government shuts down. I urge them to work with Democrats on a bipartisan compromise to fund the government and address other priorities, including protecting DREAMers and reauthorizing the Children’s Health Insurance Program, among others.
Finally, there are only two weeks left of the 2018 open enrollment period on HealthCare.gov. I encourage everyone to make sure their friends and families are aware of the December 15 deadline and take time to look at coverage options and choose a health care plan that works best for them in the coming days.
