Ryan vs. Reality
As you read Speaker Ryan’s op-ed in USA Today this morning, we thought we’d offer a look at how Ryan’s rhetoric on the House GOP’s ACA repeal bill compares to reality:
Ryan: “The collapsing law is driving up health care costs and driving out choices for American families.”
Reality: What will drive up premiums and will cause insurers to potentially drop out of the market? The uncertainty sown by Republicans, which is destabilizing our health care system.
Ryan: “Introduced this week, the American Health Care Act keeps our promise to repeal and replace Obamacare.”
Reality: Both the House and Senate have to pass it first, which seems far from a sure thing. We’d also like to remind Speaker Ryan that this bill isinconsistent with President Trump’s promiseof “insurance for everyone.”
Ryan: “Our goal is to give every American access to quality, affordable health care. For families, that means lower costs, more choices and greater control.”
Reality: The GOP bill would kick Americans off their coverage and force others to pay more for less. See an analysis from Vox on how costs would go up for middle class familieshere.
Ryan: “Our plan ensures there will be a stable transition.”
Reality: Republicans are sowing chaos and uncertainty – that’s far from a stable transition.
Ryan: “We will strengthen Medicaid so that states have the tools they need to take care of their poor and most vulnerable populations at a lower cost.”
Reality: The plan eliminates the Medicaid expansion in 31 states and Washington, DC and caps the program in 2020, forcing states to reduce benefits, cut payment rates, and ration care.
Ryan: “The House will consider this plan through an open and transparent process…”
Reality: Republicans are marking up the bill without a CBO score and have not held any hearings on the bill. See how that compares with the consideration of the ACAhere.
Ryan: “The American Health Care Act offers a better way.”
Reality: A better way forwealthy Americansandinsurance company CEOS – not working families.
