Republicans Release Bill To Cut Taxes on the Wealthy, Explode the Deficit
MESSAGE FROM THE DEMOCRATIC WHIP
Yesterday, House Republicans released their bill to cut taxes for the wealthiest Americans while leaving middle class families behind. In addition, this bill will add at least $1.5 trillion to the deficit. Four days after releasing text of the bill, Republicans plan to mark it up in committee next week, without holding a single hearing on the legislation to receive input from the American people. If Republicans are serious about reforming the nation’s tax code, they should abandon this bill and work with Democrats on bipartisan reform that is revenue neutral and benefits the middle class.
In addition, this week marked the beginning of open enrollment on HealthCare.gov, which will last until December 15th. In addition to shortening the length of the open enrollment period and shutting down the website on Sundays, the Trump Administration has also slashed the advertising budget to get the word out about enrollment. While Republicans are attempting to sabotage the law and make it harder for Americans to enroll, Democrats are working hard to get the word out about enrollment. Please encourage your friends and family to visit HealthCare.gov to sign up or change their plan. Eight in ten Americans who log on will be able to find a plan for less than $75 a month. In addition, I continue to urge the Senate to move forward with consideration of the bipartisan Alexander-Murray legislation to strengthen the Affordable Care Act.
Finally, last week, I along with Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, led a CODEL to assess the damage from Hurricanes Irma and Maria in the U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and the Florida Keys. You can see photos and video from our trip here. The delegation on this trip was deeply moved by the strength and resilience of our fellow Americans. Congress remains committed to shining a light on the need for additional assistance and rebuilding these areas stronger than before.
Sincerely yours,
Steny H. Hoyer
