Republicans Refuse to Address DACA Crisis; Trump Administration Seeks to End Protections for Pre-Existing Conditions

Message from the Democratic Whip
This week, the House considered legislation related to the opioid epidemic, which is a major public health crisis across our nation that demands bipartisan cooperation and leadership across all levels of government. I’m troubled to hear that drugs are the leading cause of death for working age Americans, and it is important for Congress to take steps to alleviate the epidemic. However, the major bills that House Republicans brought to the Floor this week do not address the root causes of the opioid crisis and fail to make significant investments in addiction treatment. I will continue to urge Republicans to work with Democrats to take meaningful action to address this crisis.
This week, I joined House Democrats to call attention to the Trump Administration’s attempts to sabotage the Affordable Care Act and remove protections for 133 million Americans with pre-existing conditions. Late last week, the Trump Administration announced they would refuse to defend the Affordable Care Act in court, an unprecedented move that could allow insurers to discriminate against individuals with pre-existing conditions, charge women more than men for the same coverage, and impose an age tax on older Americans. House Democrats will continue to fight these efforts and offer the American people a better deal focused on increasing access to affordable, quality health care for all Americans.
Today marks the sixth anniversary of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which has allowed DREAMers — young people brought here as children through no fault of their own — the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to their communities as teachers, nurses, first responders, and other leaders. It has been 283 days since President Trump unnecessarily ended the DACA program, and Republicans refuse to bring bipartisan legislation to the Floor to protect DREAMers. Instead, they are moving forward with two partisan proposals that will not become law and that are intended to prevent a bipartisan process that would allow the consideration of four different proposals to protect DREAMers, including a measure that the majority of the House would support. I continue to urge the Speaker to allow the House to work it’s will and vote on legislation to allow DREAMers to continue to contribute to our communities with a path to citizenship.
