Republicans Must Abandon TrumpCare, Responsibly Fund the Government

MESSAGE FROM THE DEMOCRATIC WHIP
Today, the House passed a bill to continue funding the government for an additional week while negotiations continue on a bill to fund the government for the remainder of the fiscal year. Republicans control the White House and both chambers of the Congress, and it is their responsibility to fund the government. They have been unable to pass a single bill to fund the government without Democratic votes since taking the majority in 2011, so they know they will to compromise with Democrats in order to pass legislation. I hope in the coming days that both parties can reach agreement on a responsible bill to fund the government. We do not have time for Republicans to continue to push for any poison pills to be included.
This week, Republicans revived their failed TrumpCare bill by suggesting that they may bring an amended bill to the Floor soon. Not only would the legislation kick 24 million Americans off their health coverage and spike premiums, but it would also allow insurers to discriminate against people with pre-existing conditions and impose an age tax on older Americans. I continue to urge Republican leaders to abandon their legislation and work with Democrats to improve the Affordable Care Act.
Lastly, tomorrow marks President Trump’s 100th day in office. So far, his presidency has been defined by chaos, incompetence, and conflicts of interest. In addition, he has broken campaign promise after campaign promise on jobs, health care, draining the swamp, and the budget. Democrats will continue to hold President Trump and House Republicans accountable to the American people.
Sincerely yours,
Steny H. Hoyer
