Republicans Leave Town Without Taking Action to Address Major Issues Facing American People
MESSAGE FROM THE DEMOCRATIC WHIP
I offer my deepest condolences to the families and friends who lost loved ones in this week’s attack in Nice, France. We stand in solidarity with the people of France and reaffirm that freedom and justice must always prevail in the face of violence.
It’s unacceptable that Republicans adjourned the House of Representatives this week for a seven-week break without taking action to address gun violence, provide the resources necessary to respond to the threat of Zika, help the people of Flint recover from the drinking water crisis, or address the opioid epidemic in our country. House Republican leaders refused to hold a vote on bipartisan, common-sense legislation to keep guns out of the hands of terrorists and criminals, and they haven’t provided the necessary resources to address the three public health crises we face. Democrats will continue to demand action throughout the August district work period and when we return to Washignton.
Finally, this week I delivered a speech at Georgetown University Law Center addressing the loss of confidence in government and the ways in which Congress can renew the American people’s faith in government. I discussed proposals in four major areas to get government working again: campaign finance reform, voting rights, redistricting reform, and government technology. If Congress works to make sure every voice is heard and that government works, we’ll be a major step closer to ensuring all our people can Make It In America.
Sincerely yours,
Steny H. Hoyer
